Last week, an AI-generated voice clone impersonating U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio successfully reached senior U.S. officials and foreign ministers over Signal. No malware. No phishing. Just a synthetic voice—lifelike enough to pass as a high-ranking government official.

To many, this was a wake-up call.

To us at Pindrop, it was the future arriving right on time.

Voice used to prove trust. Now it’s used to exploit it.

Just last year, Pindrop investigated a high-profile robocall impersonating President Biden. The cloned voice urged voters to stay home—a synthetic distortion of democracy itself. Our analysis revealed how little voice data is needed to build a convincing clone and how rarely people—or systems—can detect the difference. In fact, our internal Pindrop data shows that in just one year, the rate of deepfake attacks surged by +1,300%, up from one per month to seven per day, as outlined in our 2025 Voice Intelligence Security Report.

Now, with the Rubio attack, we’ve seen synthetic voice move from influence to infiltration. And the threat doesn’t stop at political figures.
