A behind-the-scenes look at hired actors, deepfakes, and coordinated attempts to infiltrate your organization- and why continuous identity verification is the only true defense.

When Pindrop first revealed that deepfake candidates were already making it into live interviews, the reaction was immediate: hiring leaders, CISOs, and Corporate Boards realized that the threat wasn’t theoretical- it had already infiltrated their hiring process. Our real-time technology that detects deepfakes in meetings, PindropⓇ Pulse for Meetings, showed just how easily hiring processes can be compromised through everyday video conferencing tools.

In a recent interview with a candidate who passed every preliminary screen, including resume filters, assessments, and virtual introductions- our Pindrop HR team witnessed a post-interview sequence that made it clear we were dealing with a coordinated effort.

Here’s how:

After the interview, the candidate didn’t just conclude the interview, but immediately initiated a call with a third-party “handler,” delivering a full debrief of the interview: every question asked, every answer given, and what needed to be refined for the next round. They even discussed who would complete the upcoming technical assessment, confirming the original candidate wasn’t the person who would be completing the process.

This wasn’t a system glitch. It was a deliberate, real-time intelligence transfer.

What makes this even more alarming is that it bypassed every existing “layer of defense”: things like resume scanning, keyword-matching, reference checks, and checks for authentication. The breach occurred because no existing defense control confirmed that the person on screen was the same individual throughout the process. Identity wasn’t being verified continuously: today this is a gap that attackers have uncovered and are exploiting.

AI candidate ranking is increasing your fraud exposure

While many talent acquisition teams now rely on AI-enhanced resume parsing tools to streamline applicant flow, these technologies often increase exposure to risk. Resumes are being written, often entirely, by generative language models trained to reverse-engineer job descriptions. That makes fraud harder to detect and easier to scale: candidates with no real experience are being pushed forward in the pipeline simply because their resume and background aligns with the system’s scoring algorithm.

The result: fraudulent applicants are not just getting through- they’re being prioritized.

What our own data shows: This is a systemic security risk

Pindrop’s own analysis of our remote hiring pipeline uncovered a disturbing pattern:

1 in 6 applicants show clear signs of fraud.

1 in 343 was linked to infrastructure or behavioral patterns associated with DPRK (North Korea).

1 in 4 of those DPRK-linked applicants has used deepfake technology during live interviews.

Then we started digging in even further. Even in a relatively small sample of applicants to two roles, the signal is clear:

MLOps role (US):

8% of candidates who submitted a take‑home assessment had someone else complete it.

79% of candidates who took the take-home assessment conducted the technical interviews with their cameras off (an automatic rejection on our side), but a sign of how often the identity is obscured.

Software Engineer (Authentication team) (US):

6% had a different person show up for the technical interview than for the initial interview.

25% joined with cameras off.

Those numbers may seem small at first glance. But when applied across a year’s worth of hiring in an organization, or across sensitive roles, they represent a meaningful, systemic vulnerability.

This is not a recruitment problem- it’s a national security concern. These are not isolated actors. These are coordinated, well-practiced operations exploiting weak identity controls in corporate hiring systems.

This problem didn’t start with AI—and, it won’t stop without a technical solution

Even without synthetic media, the same deception tactics persist:

Stand-ins attending interviews

Fake credentials and references

Candidates who disappear after onboarding—replaced by someone else entirely

According to SHRM, 32% of HR professionals report catching deliberate misrepresentation in the hiring process. HireRight’s 2024 Employment Screening Benchmark Report found over 50% of employers have detected critical resume discrepancies during background checks. These aren’t clerical errors, they are intentional violations of trust.

In several cases prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice, software engineers were found hiring imposters to complete interviews or onboarding steps. Forbes recently reported on the “bait-and-switch” hire: a legitimate candidate interviews and accepts the offer, but an unvetted substitute starts the job.

The common thread across all these threats- deepfakes, stand-ins, handlers, manipulated resumes- is a failure to verify who the candidate really is, and to maintain that verification across every stage of the hiring process.
