This week in phone fraud saw reports of new phone fraud tactics springing up in both the UK and US.

On Monday in the UK, AOL’s Sarah Coles wrote about a new type of phone scam hitting Europe. Sarah cited one Surrey couple that had been duped out of £42,000 ($57,000). Diving into the details, Sarah explained how the couple first received a phone call from someone pretending to be from their bank. The fraudster cited suspicious activity on their account, taking advantage of their concern to get a hold of money they had recently borrowed in order to invest in a buy-to-let property.

On Wednesday in Lee County Florida, local affiliate NBC 2 reported on a new phone fraud campaign. One Fort Myers citizen was unlucky enough to receive 73 phone calls from fraudsters over the course of four days. Authorities said the calls originated from India, but caller ID spoofing leads victims to believe the calls are from the US, tricking people into answering. In the event that no one answers, the perpetrators leave a threatening message, telling the victim they better call back.

Fort Myers is the largest city in Lee County. Recently our 2014 IRS Phone Fraud Study found Lee county to be one of the most targeted counties in the country, demonstrating that the phone fraud problem continues to be an issue in many areas across the country.
