Because phone transactions do not require a physical card swipe, fraudsters can use the same stolen identity information they use for online attacks, without needing to worry about increased online security measures.

In 2014, one major consumer electronics retailer estimated that 5% of all orders taken over the phone resulted in a chargeback. For the most popular brand name products, such as Apple, chargeback fraud was as high as 50%. Read a case study here.
