Dec. 19, 2014 – The Week in Phone Fraud

TWIPF2This week in phone fraud news, Microsoft launches a legal attack on tech support phone scammers and Smart Customer Service offers the three best practices to avert call center fraud.

Today, the Register reported on Microsoft’s new campaign to end the popular Microsoft tech support phone scam. The company has filed a lawsuit against Omnitech Support, claiming trademark infringement, domain squatting, and unfair and deceptive business practices. Microsoft claims that this is the first in a wave of actions aimed at taking down phone tech support scam operations.

On Thursday, Michele Masterson of Smart Customer Service provided best practices against call center fraud, including an automated verification system, implement an analytics system and protect call center infrastructure. Masterson cites Pindrop’s Greg Adams for the story: “Added Greg Adams, vice president of product management at Pindrop Security, in a statement, ‘One out of every 2,900 calls to a financial institution call center is fraudulent.’”
